Chapter Twelve

“Saying yes to Riordan was a mistake,” Isabelle blurted out as soon as the door of the spare bedroom closed behind the sisters.

“Why?” Gabrielle’s puzzled eyes searched her sister’s face for an explanation. “I thought you loved him.”

“I like him a lot…hell, maybe I even love him, but it just feels too convenient.”

“Convenient?”

“You know, the two of us, the two of them…bingo!”

“But it’s perfect, can’t you see? What were the odds of the four of us finding one another? Don’t tell me you don’t believe in Fate, Miss Mills and Boon romantic.”

“Perhaps Fate was bringing you and Reilly together,” Isabelle reasoned. “Or even you and Riordan. What if Reilly was meant for me?”

“You’re attracted to Reilly?” Gabrielle took a step back as though her sister had slapped her.

“No!”

Isabelle’s response was so immediate and instinctive; it couldn’t be anything but the truth.

Gabrielle relaxed.

“What if Riordan had been the one to open the door the first day you got here?” Gabrielle had told her that Reilly seemed to have immediately staked his claim, in some sort of unspoken ‘I saw her first’ rule the brothers seemed to have. “What if Riordan had wanted you just as much that day, but was forced to accept that Reilly saw you first?”

“I can’t explain it, but I knew right away that he was the one wearing the scarf in the picture.” The one she had been drooling over even before she met him.

“And remember Riordan touched your breasts that first day?” He hadn’t even touched Isabelle’s yet

“I wish I hadn’t told you that.”

“You would have kept it from me?” Isabelle’s eyes searched her twin’s. “There’s nothing else you’re keeping from me, is there?”

“Of course there isn’t! Issy, the only reason I wish I hadn’t told you about Riordan touching my breasts is because it sounds more intimate than it was. Remember I told you that I took a quick look at his crotch and there wasn’t even a hint of an erection?” A thought suddenly occurred to Gabrielle. “And now I know them better, I’m convinced that he did it merely to annoy Reilly.”

“Or maybe, you’re meant to be the wife they wanted to share,” Isabelle mused.

“Nonsense.” Gabrielle took her twin by the arms and gave her a little shake. “Any fool can see that Riordan loves you, not me. He was happy for Reilly to have me to himself even before he knew about you.”

“I know it’s stupid, but his mother telling us about how close they are made me wonder if he proposed because he loves me or if it’s motivated by the fear of losing his brother. If I marry him, we can all live together as one big, happy family. If he marries someone else, she isn’t likely to want to share a house with you and Reilly. In fact, she might not even like you. That wouldn’t be such a good situation, can’t you see?” Isabelle raised her hands in the air to show her frustration. “As I said, it’s all too bloody convenient.
